Week 4 Campers making homemade vanilla mint ice cream – adding fresh mint, basil and lavender from the Earthbound garden.

The kids made this fun and simple recipe at camp last week.  Just combine the ingredients and add anything you want to make it your own one-of-a kind flavour (Earthbound campers had a choice of adding fresh mint, basil and lavender from the Earthbound garden). Then just shake the pouch of soft serve – fun, easy – YUM in just 5 minutes!

Week 4 Campers Learn to Make Ice Cream

Serves 1

Ingredients:

  • Ice cubes (enough to fill half a large ziploc bag)
  • 1 cup of half and half cream
  • 1/2 cup salt (Bigger granules work best, like Rock Salt or Kosher Salt, but table salt is fine)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Your favorite mixins such as chocolate chips, cereal pieces, or fresh fruit.

Tools:

  • 1 small ziplock bag
  • 1 large ziplock bag

How to:

  1. Combine sugar, cream and vanilla extract in the smaller ziploc bag and seal tightly
  2. Place the salt, ice AND  the sealed smaller bag inside of the large ziploc bag
  3. Seal the large ziploc bag tightly
  4. Shake the bags until the mixture hardens (about 5 minutes). Feel the small bag to see if it’s done.
  5. Take the small bag out of the large bag, add your special ingredients (mint, chocolate chips, fruit… anything you like)
  6. Eat and enjoy your home made ice cream right out of the bag!
